Effects of Three Different Testosterone Formulations in Female-to-Male Transsexual Persons

This clinical study from the University of Bologna, Italy, follows a group of FTM (female-to-male) transsexual patients as they undergo testosterone hormone replacement therapy (HRT) over the course of a year. Overall, the study finds the results to be largely positive. Participants saw lean body mass (muscle) increasing, as well as fat decreasing. The study did not find any adverse health effects, though they recognize that the limited time frame*.
*Many changes occur from use of testosterone HRT over the course of one year, though a majority of long-lasting effects occur multiple years into the treatment.
